    Polder - Summer

polders are areas who once used to be sea, but with the years became land.there is pretty fertile soil, used to grow the famous polder bintjes...potatos for french fries.
polders are mostly below sealevel, protected against the sea only by pretty vulnerable dunes. if people go on behaving like they wouldnt cause a climat change, caused by driving their big cars, the sealevel will rise more and soon the polders will be sea again.
i live in the polders. i love them because here is always fresh sea breeze...all is extrem flat, which ''creates'' a very large sky.
with good weather you can see easily 1o miles in all directions without seeing any big obstacle.

The Atlantic wall -- Peace, please !

The Atlantic wall. Leftovers from a maniac.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

    - Herman Goering (Hitler's chief deputy and one of the worst nazis, a real bad guy!) at the Nuremberg trials

    Basilica_of_Koekelberg
    Jul 27, 2005

The Basilica of Koekelberg in Brussels (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) is the 8th largest church in the world. The Art Deco church is 89 meter high and 167 meter long and was build to commemorate the the 75th anniversary of Belgiums independence.

It is a rather sober church and stands with their raw brick walls and the modest use of gold and decoration in hard contrast to the average church in Belgium, with their ample decorations, their use of much gold, polished dark wood and lovely paintings.

It seems like the building wants to use sunlight instead, converting it into a golden cast, generously spread over the cold walls and floors and creating a dichotomic labyrinth of cold and warm, light and shadow.

You can go to the roof gallery from where you have a breath taking view over Brussels and on the Atomium.
